The Journey to Sehaj Paath

A Transformative Path to Gurbani Mastery

Journey to Sehaj Paath

The Sikh Missionary Society has proudly launched a new educational initiative titled “Journey to Sehaj Path”, beginning in January 2025. This programme has been thoughtfully designed to encourage members of the Sangat, particularly the younger generation, to engage with Gurbani in a meaningful way. By emphasising correct pronunciation and a natural, confident style of reading, the programme aims to deepen participants’ understanding of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and to strengthen their connection with Sikh teachings and principles.

Recognising that reading and understanding Gurbani can be a challenging journey, the programme is structured into three progressive levels, each carefully tailored to meet the needs of students at different stages of learning. The goal is not only to teach reading skills but also to foster a lasting appreciation for Gurbani, its teachings, and the wisdom of the Gurus.

Part 1: Beginners

The first part of the programme is designed for students who are taking their initial steps in learning Gurmukhi. A detailed and structured curriculum has been prepared to ensure a strong foundation. Students begin with the basics of the Gurmukhi script, learning the letters and their correct pronunciation. Special focus is given to Penti (the five vowel sounds) and Muharni (pronunciation drills), which serve as essential building blocks for accurate reading. Through these lessons, students gradually gain confidence and develop a strong linguistic and spiritual foundation, enabling them to approach Gurbani reading with clarity and understanding.

Part 2: Intermediate

The intermediate level is intended for students who have a basic understanding of Gurmukhi letters but struggle with reading fluently. At this stage, teaching begins with Muharni, reinforcing correct pronunciation, and gradually progresses to combining letters and forming words. Students are guided through structured exercises to read short passages of Gurbani and selected basic Banis, which help them develop both speed and accuracy. This level focuses on building fluency, comprehension, and a deeper appreciation for the rhythm and melody of Gurbani, allowing students to read with confidence and devotion.

Part 3: Advanced

The advanced level is designed for students who are already familiar with Gurmukhi but occasionally make errors in pronunciation while reading. In this stage, students receive specialized training in the correct sounds of letters and vowels (matra), along with advanced techniques in Santhiya, the precise pronunciation and intonation of Gurbani. Through this level, participants refine their reading skills, internalize the spiritual essence of Gurbani, and gain the ability to recite sacred texts with accuracy, devotion, and understanding.

To make the programme accessible to all, classes are being conducted at multiple venues, including the Central Sikh Temple and Yishun Gurdwara Sahib, as well as online via the Zoom platform. This flexible approach allows students from different locations and backgrounds to participate, ensuring that the teachings of Gurbani reach a wider Sangat and inspire the next generation.

The “Journey to Sehaj Path” programme is more than just a series of classes; it is a pathway to spiritual growth, cultural understanding, and a lifelong connection with Sikh values. By nurturing the correct reading of Gurbani and instilling confidence in the students, the Sikh Missionary Society hopes to empower the community to carry forward the rich heritage of Sikh teachings for generations to come.
