Cultural Learning Visit to Gurdwara Sahib Yishun

2025 oct 17th students from chinese school 4

On 13 October 2025, Gurdwara Sahib Yishun hosted a comprehensive cultural learning visit designed to foster intercultural understanding and appreciation among youth. A total of 150 school students took part in the programme, which aimed to provide them with meaningful exposure to Sikh traditions, beliefs, and practices within an authentic religious and community setting. The visit was carefully structured to combine learning, observation, and participation, allowing students to gain both theoretical knowledge and practical insights into Sikh culture.

A key highlight of the programme was the invitation of Jagmanjit Singh, a lecturer from the Sikh Missionary Society (SMS), who delivered an informative and engaging talk on the Nishan Sahib. His presentation traced the historical origins of the Nishan Sahib and explained its deep spiritual and symbolic significance within Sikhism. Students learned how the Nishan Sahib represents Sikh identity, sovereignty, resilience, and the enduring commitment to service and justice. The lecture also provided valuable context on how this sacred emblem continues to serve as a unifying symbol for Sikhs worldwide.

Following the lecture, the students participated in a guided tour of the Gurdwara premises. This tour introduced them to important areas within the Gurdwara, including the prayer hall, where they observed Sikh worship practices and learned about the central role of the Guru Granth Sahib in Sikh spiritual life. The tour helped students better understand the layout, customs, and etiquette of a Gurdwara, reinforcing respect for religious spaces and practices.

Throughout the visit, interactive engagement was strongly encouraged. Students were given opportunities to ask questions, share reflections, and engage in open dialogue with the lecturer and facilitators. This interactive approach helped deepen their understanding and allowed them to connect Sikh values with broader themes of mutual respect, social responsibility, and cultural diversity.

Overall, the cultural learning visit had a positive and lasting impact. It enhanced students’ awareness and understanding of Sikh heritage and traditions, promoted respect and appreciation for cultural and religious diversity, and reinforced the role of Gurdwara Sahib Yishun as a hub for community learning and outreach.

The programme also highlighted the valuable contribution of Sikh Missionary Society in supporting educational initiatives through the expertise of Jagmanjit Singh.
